About your Visit
Please review the following information about your upcoming visit to understand what to expect during your appointment.
COVID-19 Screening
Patients will be contacted 24 to 72 hours prior to their appointment date. During this reminder call, the office assistant will review a series of COVID-19 screening questions. Questions asked during these calls may include (but are not limited to):
- Are you having any cold or flu-like symptoms? (Cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache, nausea, etc.)
- Have you travelled outside the country within the last 14 days?
- Have you or anyone in your household been contacted by the Public Health Authority and advised to self-quarantine within the last 14 days?
Please answer truthfully to keep patients and staff safe. Should you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, the office assistant will rebook you 14 days after your original appointment. If you do not feel well during the day of your appointment please call in to let our office know and rebook for a different time.
Office Appointments
Dr. Katherine Paton sees patients in two different locations: at the Regent Medical Building, and at the Eye Care Centre. Call the office to confirm your appointment location.
Arrival and Wait Times
Dr. Katherine Paton’s office has very high volume and is highly likely to have extended wait times.
Please call 30 minutes before your appointment time to receive an estimated wait time. Once you arrive in the office please ensure you check in with the receptionist.
If you would like to remain outside of the waiting room please leave a cell phone or contact number with the front desk, and await a call for your turn to see the doctor.
Please be advised that wait times may go beyond two hours and we cannot guarantee exact time estimates. We understand that your time is valuable and we greatly appreciate your patience and consideration.
Seeing the Doctor
When entering the exam room, please leave all your belongings on the seat located behind the patient’s chair.
Avoid bringing too many items into the office and please do not place your belongings on the counter.
After your Appointment
Please check-out with the receptionist for your next appointment.
Patients can expect to be dilated after their appointment which may cause difficulty seeing. Some patients are recommended to avoid driving to their appointment.
Office Imaging and Testing
Images and tests are ordered by Dr. Katherine Paton herself. There are two types of tests that are performed in-office: OCT and Visual Field testing. Individuals could be requested to do one or both tests.
OCT imaging does require dilation to please plan accordingly. If you need to be picked up after your appointment, please ensure that you have this organized prior to your appointment.
Visual field testing is performed without dilation.
In-office testing takes anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes. Wait times for these appointments are considerably shorter than follow-up appointments. Please arrive on time for your appointment.
Cataract Surgery
Patients should have been provided with pre-surgery and post-surgery information. If you did not receive this information, please contact the office. As part of this package, a list of drops will be prescribed and is to be used for 3 days prior to surgery day.
Patients should arrive to the Eye Care Centre on time and check in with the front desk of the building.
The cataract procedure does not take very long; however, patients can expect to be at the Eye Care Centre for 2 to 3 hours as per facility policy. Patients must be picked up by an individual in order to leave the vicinity. It is recommended that the patient have someone stay with them at least over night to ensure the safety of the patient.
Follow-up appointments should be provided to the patient after their procedure has been done. The first appointment after the procedure is done either in-person or through telehealth call. Subsequent appointments will be done in-office.
Continue to use eye drops as prescribed, avoid heavy lifting, swimming or exercise for the next 1 to 2 weeks or unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Paton.
Treatment at Section E
Individuals booked for treatment at the Eye Care Centre will know of their appointment times 72 to 24 hours prior to their scheduled date. Treatments at Section E are typically quick; however, wait times can vary.
Please arrive on time for your appointment and check in with the receptionist at Section E. Some treatments will require dilation, so please plan ahead to be picked up if necessary.
